You’ll know Drew McConnell as the bassist from Babyshambles with the haunting punk rhythm lines. What you probably won’t know is that Drew has been working on a side project collective called Helsinki with the likes of Albert Hammond Jr of the Strokes, Fionn Regan (for whom Drew also plays bass) and even the violin player from Larrikin Love. Here, Dublin born McConnell arranges the music and writes the material – a kind of avant-garde, acoustic carnival of the senses, encompassing indie, world music and covers of his main band with Pete Doherty. At the moment Helsinki is just a studio project, so if you’re dying to see Drew you can draw his fire at Secret Garden Party, where he’ll be performing with Fionn this July.
Drew’s new project promises us an energetic, ramshackle affair.
