There’s more than a shade of David Bowie about London School of Economics-dropout Max McElligot, the thin white frame behind the ostentatious moniker. Equally, there’s no sense that he sounds anything like Mr Stardust at all - the comparison lies entirely in McElligot’s playful song writing, midnight charm and forward thinking vision. Remember when pop music showed a disregard for boundaries? As a child of 1987, Max probably doesn’t either, but that hasn’t stopped him pushing the envelope in the art-rock stakes as his latest trip to America boasted liaisons with Flaming Lips’s producer, Dave Fridmann, who is currently buffing Max’s next hit. Make sure you get to the barriers early for his show at Lounge on the Farm this July.

“‘The King & All of His Men’ is an instant modern classic.” - Glasswerk.co.uk
Soulful, brassy, barely in her twenties and signed to Rough Trade, south Londoner Roxanne Tataei is a hard act to follow. “I write my songs, like I’d write my diary...” reads her website, which would be true, if she had anytime to sit and navel gaze between supporting the likes of Roxy Music and Stevie Wonder...
Musically though, Rox does at least wear her heart on her sleeve, as her forthcoming debut LP ‘Memoirs’ attests; a mixture of jazzy licks, r’n’b melodies and good time rock steady, where Rox sings us through her own personal lovesick past and back into a pair blue suede size nines ready for a night out on the town. Hotly tipped at Latitude this year, she’s spent the last few months in NYC working with Commissioner Gordon, whose previous exploits including knob twiddling for the likes of Damien Marley, KRS One and Lauryn Hill. Quite an accreditation - ignore at your peril.
